유봉상의 개인전 < Immergé >은 지난 2017년 이탈리아 밀라노 무디마 미술관에서의 전시 이후 약 4년 만에 열리는 것으로 2019년부터 2021년까지 최근 3년간의 작업을 통해 탄생한 신작을 최초로 선보이는 자리이다. 오페라 갤러리는 이번 전시를 통해 작가의 보다 숙련되고 깊어진 예술적 표현으로 재현된 작품들을 통해 그 몽환적이고 신비스러운 공간으로 관람객을 초대하고자 한다. 
 
작가 유봉상이 재현해 낸 풍경 속 공간과 피사체들은 결코 평면에 가만히 머무르고 있지 않다. 작품을 감상하며 그 공간을 응시하다 보면, 작가의 회화적 표현 즉, 톤의 일정함, 리듬감, 밸런스, 소재의 밀도 등을 통해 보는 사람으로 하여금 마치 입체적으로 움직이고 있는 실제 풍경을 바라보고 있는 것만 같은 표현적 착각을 불러온다. 이러한 작가의 재현은 작품 앞에 서 있는 사람의 단순한 감상을 넘어 그들을 작품 속 공간에 빠져들 듯 가두고, 나아가 공간에 젖어 들게 한다. 이처럼 감상자가 작품 속 공간 안에 자연스럽게 녹아 들고 나면, 감상자는 스스로 공간이 가진 입체적인 요소들을 채워 나간다. 따뜻한 바람이 부는 숲 속, 비에 젖어 든 잎사귀, 숲이라는 웅장함이 주는 자연의 소리 등 이 모든 상상들이 감상자에게 오감을 통한 작품의 감상을 가능케 하는 것 이다.
 
유봉상은 오랜 시간 ‘못의 작가’라는 수식어로 설명되어 왔다. 그의 작품에서 ‘못’이라는 소재가 가진 특징, 이로 인해 필연적으로 따라올 수 밖에 없는 작가의 노동성은 이제 더이상 반복하여 말하지 않아도 되는 작품의 한 부분일 뿐이다. 소재라는 특징과 궁금증에만 치우쳐 그의 작품을 바라보기 보다는 감상자가 놓칠지 모르는 풍경 속에 담긴 수만 가지의 추상적 언어, 감동, 울림 등에 집중할 필요가 있다. 따라서, 이번 전시는 소재의 특별함에 대해 이야기하는 것에서 그치는 것이 아니라 ‘못’이라는 딱딱한 금속으로 표현하는 장엄하면서도 평화로운 작품의 이미지가 주는 역설적 표현과 이 너머에 담긴 무언가에 대해서 말하고자 한다.
 
그의 작품은 특유의 현대적인 회화 표현과 섬세함이 빚어낸 아름다운 풍경 위에 관람객이 스스로 만들어내는 상상의 갈래를 더해 작품을 바라보는 다양한 시각을 제시하고, 나아가 작가와 관객 한 사람, 한 사람의 교감으로 완성된 각기 다른 공간 속에 깊이 젖어 드는 신비로운 경험을 선사할 것이다. 오페라 갤러리 서울은 이번 전시를 통해 관람객 모두가 유봉상이 재현하는 명상적이자 초월적인 공간 속에서 평안과 위로를 느낄 수 있는 기회가 되기를 기대한다.

Opera Gallery Seoul will be hosting the first exhibition of 2021, Yoo Bong Sang’s solo exhibition < Immergé > from March 25 to April 14. His solo exhibition, held in four years after the exhibition at the Fondazione Mudima, Milan, Italy in 2017, presents the series of new works completed from 2019 to 2021. With the deepened artistic expression based on the skilled technique, the new works on view take the viewers to a dreamy and mystical space.

The spaces and figures in the image do not stay still within the landscape that Yoo Bong Sang portrayed. Artistic expression of the balance, rhythm, smooth tone, light and shade come together before the eyes of the viewer and hence compose a state of moment being locked into the place of image. After viewers are absorbed into the space, they start creating their own stereoscopic appreciation and finally complete their own space within the work. In other words, their imagination such as forests with a warm wind, wet leaves and sound of nature from magnificent forests makes it possible for viewers to appreciate Yoo Bong Sang’s works with their own five senses.
 
Yoo Bong Sang has been called as a “Nail” artist. Artist’s labor is the inevitable characteristic of his artworks, for he has chosen ‘nails’ as the medium. However, it is just one part of his works that there is no need to be mentioned repeatedly. From now on, viewers have to point out and pay attention to thousands of abstract visual-languages, impression, echo and the other things. Thus, this exhibition would like to share a paradoxical mood and a mysterious story in peaceful as well as majestic scenery expressed by ‘nails’, hard and cold metals rather than just talk about medium’s uniqueness.
 
Yoo Bong Sang’s work encourages people to add their own imagination upon its beautiful scenery where he has filled with his contemporary pictorial expression and delicate touch. This journey of appreciation will provide viewers with mysterious experience seeping into a space which is completed by communion between the artist and each viewer. Opera Gallery Seoul expects viewers to feel at peace and be consoled in Yoo Bong Sang’s contemplative and transcendental space.
