줄리엔 크루제 (1986년 프랑스 르 블랑 메스닐 출생, 프랑스 몽트뢰유에서 거주하며 작업)는 시, 음악, 조각, 아상블라주, 영상, 애니메이션을 통합하는 변화무쌍한 작품을 제작한다. 작가는 본인이 물려받은 과거, 현재, 미래를 작품 세계 중심으로 두는데, 이는 다양한 시간성에 관한 해양횡단 후기 식민 과정을 불러 일으킨다. 일반적인 서술과 문화적 축소를 회피하는 크루제의 작업은 종종 사회적 현실과 시대착오에 주목하며 기약성의 대상을 구성한다. 해양조에 의해 해변으로 쓸려 온 미래의 유물과 유사한 크루제 작품은 역사, 기술, 지리와 자아를 증폭된 가치로 구체화된다. 작가는 최근 런던 캠든 아트센터, 시카고 다큐먼트, 스위스 CAN 뉴샤텔 예술센터, 파리 팔레 드 도쿄, 파리 페르노 리카 재단, 파리 베통살롱에서 개인전을 가졌다. 마르세유 마니페스타 13, 벨기에 현대 아트 센터 빌, 프랑크푸르트 현대 미술관, 파리 시립현대미술관, 렌비엔날레, 광주 비엔날레, 리옹 비엔날레, 족자카르타 트리엔날레 등 단체전에 참여했다. 크루제는 2021년 퐁피두센터에서 수여한 마르셀 뒤샹 상의 4명의 후보 중 한 명이다. 그는 파리 퐁피두 센터, 맨체스터 HOME, 몬트리올 MOMENTA, 상파울루 프레스타스 트리엔날레에 참여할 예정이다.

아론 가버-마이코브스카 (1978년 미국 워싱턴 DC 출생, 로스앤젤레스에서 거주하며 작업) 의 작업은 강박적 운동감각의 연구를 통해 의사소통 형식을 그리는 수행적 심문의 불확정적인 기록이다. 이러한 즉흥적인 기록은 춤, 강연, 코미디 그리고 결국 그림의 불가능한 조합으로 존재한다. 강렬하면서도 질서 없는 마이코브스카의 주의로 이끌린 작가의 신체는 효능과 취약성의 교차점에 확고히 배치된다. 새로운 형태와 존재 방식에 접근하는 수단인 한편 주관과 현실 변수를 반영하기도 한다. 우아함, 품위, 기교의 순간은 난동, 서투름, 비가독성의 분출과 함께 어우러진다. 최근 개인전은 로스앤젤레스 블럼 앤 포, 런던 마시모 드 카를로, 뉴욕 클리어링, 파리 하이아트, 오슬로 스탠다드가 있다. 크노케 클리어링 갤러리, 로스앤젤레스 니노 마이어, 마이애미 다이치/가고시안, 베를린 막스 헤츨러, 툴루즈 레 자바투아 근현대 미술관, 덴버 현대미술관, 뉴욕 뷰로 단체전에 참여했다.

김훈규 (1986년 대한민국 서울 출생, 영국 런던에 거주하며 작업) 는 무한한 범위의 역사적 탐구를 이용해 가슴 아픈 우화적 작품을 제작한다. 강렬한 상상력이 깃든 광대하고 복잡한 서술의 경험 세계는 기술적 신자유주의 영향에 사로잡힌 후기 세계화의 세상을 반영한다. 계층 구조의 심화, 극단적 신념 체계와 논쟁은 종종 의인화된 대리인들의 모자이크에 의해 구동되는 상세한 묘사로 완전히 보여진다. 표면적으로는 현대 상황의 현실에 바탕을 둔 환상 세계인 김훈규의 작품은 변칙적 역할을 하는데, 예증적이며 상징적인 동시에, 자세하면서 진단적이며, 귀여우면서 비판적이다. 최근 개인전은 프라이베르크 E-Werk 미술관, 런던 더 어프로치, 런던 화이트 컨두이트 프로젝트, 런던 스퀘어 갤러리, 런던 호크니 갤러리가 있다. 런던 HIX 아트, 런던 누너리 갤러리, 런던 더 첼로 팩토리, 런던 크라입트 갤러리, 런던 밀레나 화이트 하우스, 런던 럼 팩토리 보우 아트 단체전에 참여했다.

펜티 몽코넨 (1975년 미국 미니애폴리스 출생, 미국 로스 앤젤레스에서 거주하며 작업) 은 이질적이고 심지어 모순적인 지식의 영역을 의미있는 괴물에 살아가는 예술 작품에 융합시킨다. 몽코넨은 끊임없이 확장되는 연구를 활용해 관계가 없을 법한 것들의 공통된 실마리를 찾아낸다. 경계 공간을 차지한 예술의 경향에 초점 맞춘 몽코넨의 작업은 우리가 알고 있는 세계의 모든 예술과 다른 모든 것을 나누는 경계 부근에 존재한다. 최근 개인전은 리즈 크래프트와 함께한 오슬로 슈로스, 제네바 트루스 앤드 컨시퀜시스, 로스앤젤레스 제니스, 로스 앤젤레스 해머미술관이 있다. 단체전은 로스앤젤레스 해머미술관, 상하이 유즈 미술관, 베를린 탄야 레이튼, 안마스 현대미술관, 로스앤젤레스 나이트 갤러리, 베르겐 쿤스트할레, 뉴욕 볼토라미 갤러리가 있다.

High Art 갤러리는 2013년 로맹 셰네, 제이슨 황, 필리프 조핀에 의해 설립되었고, 프랑스 파리와 아를에 있다.
Various Small Fires (VSF)는 2012년 에스더 김 바렛 (Esther Kim Varet)에 의해 미국 로스앤젤레스에 설립되었다. 갤러리 이름은 LA를 대표하는 화가이자 사진작가인 에드 루샤 (Ed Ruscha)의 대표적인 사진집 <다양한 작은 불꽃들과 우유 (Various Small Fires and Milk)> (1964)에서 가져왔다. 라이터의 불꽃, 타오르는 신문, 불타는 성냥, 담뱃불, 성화 등 16장의 불을 주제로 한 사진집처럼 세상을 밝히는 다양한 불이 되고 싶다는 의미가 있다. 지난 9년간 VSF는 국제적으로 떠오르는 신인 작가와 중견, 원로 작가들을 소개하며 LA 미술계의 촉매자 역할을 해왔다.

할리우드에 위치한 갤러리 건물은 140여 평의 부지에 현지 건축가 존스톤 마크리 (Johnston Marklee)가 디자인했다. LA의 풍부한 자연광을 살려 화이트 큐브 갤러리를 구현했으며, 야외공간은 조각을 비롯한 다양한 설치 작품 전시도 가능하다. 사회적 책임과 환경 문제에 대한 VSF의 관심은 구체적 실천을 통한 비전으로 드러난다. 갤러리에서 선보이는 작가 절반이 여성으로, 여성 작가들이 활동할 기회를 적극적으로 만들고 있다. 갤러리 공간은 100% 태양광 에너지를 사용하고 일상적인 탄소 배출량을 절감하는 등 친환경적인 갤러리 운영 모델을 제시하고자 한다.

VSF 서울은 새로운 문화 공간의 입지로 각광받는 한남동 독서당로에 자리 잡았으며 2019년 4월 1일에 개관했다. 서울 지점 개관전으로 로스앤젤레스를 대표하는 전설적인 두 작가, 빌리 알 벵스턴 (Billy Al Bengston)과 에드 루샤 (Ed Ruscha) 2인전을 개최했다. 그 외에도 조슈아 네이선슨 (Joshua Nathanson), 매스 배스(Math Bass), 리즈 매직 레이저 (Liz Magic Laser), 조쉬 클라인 (Josh Kline), 소저너 트루스 파슨스 (Sojourner Truth Parsons), 그리고 지나 비버스 (Gina Beavers)의 개인전을 통해 작가들을 소개한다. VSF는 세계적인 갤러리들과 돈독한 관계이다. COVID-19을 함께 헤쳐나가길 바라는 마음을 담아 뉴욕 살롱 94 (Salon 94)와 첫 번째 협업 전시에서 엘리자베스 닐 (Elizabeth Neel)을 소개했고, 브뤼셀과 뉴욕의 클리어링 갤러리 (Clearing Gallery) 했고, 로스 앤젤레스 나이트 갤러리(Night Gallery), 베를린 쾨니히 갤러리 (König Galerie) 등과 협업 전시를 진행할 예정이다. 앞으로 VSF를 발판삼아 서울과 로스앤젤레스가 더욱 친밀해지고 국내외 미술계에 활력을 불어넣기를 기대한다.

에스더 김 바렛 (Esther Kim Varet) 대표는 한국계 미국인으로 예일대학교와 컬럼비아 대학원에서 미술사를 수학했다. 그는 뉴욕에서 경험을 쌓은 후 LA에 자신의 갤러리를 열었다. 지난 8년간 LA 미술계에서 자신만의 미학으로 갤러리를 운영해 온 경험을 살려 2019년 4월 서울에 첫 지점을 열며 새로운 도전을 시작한다.

Julien Creuzet (b. 1986 in Le Blanc Mesnil, France, lives and works in Montreuil, France) creates protean artworks incorporating poetry, music, sculpture, assemblage, film and animation. Evoking trans-oceanic postcolonial transactions in relation to multiple temporalities the artist places his own inherited past, present and future at the heart of his production. Eluding generalised narratives and cultural reductions, Creuzet’s work often spotlights anachronisms and social realities to construct objects of irreducibility. Akin to relics from the future brought ashore by an oceanic tide, Creuzet's works materialise as amplified tokens of history, technology, geography and selves. Recent solo exhibitions include: Camden Arts Center, London (upcoming), Document, Chicago, CAN Centre d’art Neuchâtel, Palais de Tokyo, Paris, Fondation Ricard, Paris, Bétonsalon, Paris. Aaron Garber-Maikovska’s (b.1978 in Washington DC, USA, lives and works in Los Angeles, USA) works are indeterminate transcripts of performative interrogations, tracing out modes of communication through compulsively kinaesthetic investigations. Improvisational in nature, these transcripts exist as somewhat inexplicable, an impossible combination of dance, lecture, comedy and ultimately painting. Driven by Maikovska’s intense but indiscriminate attention, the artist’s body is placed firmly at an intersection of efficacy and vulnerability — in one sense as a vehicle to approach new forms and ways of being — in another as a reflection of one’s subjective and real parameters. Moments of grace, elegance and finesse co-mingle with spurts of unruliness, clumsiness and illegibility. Hun Kyu Kim (b. 1986 in Seoul, South Korea, lives and works in London, England) crafts poignant allegorical pictures employing an almost limitless range of historical inquiry. Vast intricate narrative universes laced with intense imagination reflect upon a post-globalized world grabbling with the effects of technological neoliberalism. Deep hierarchical structures, extreme belief systems and polemics are on full display through detailed narratives often driven by a mosaic of anthropomorphic proxies. An ostensibly fantastical world grounded in the realities of the contemporary condition, Kim’s work functions as an anomaly of sorts, that which is simultaneously illustrative and emblematic, detailed and diagnostic, cute and critical. Pentti Monkkonen’s (b. 1975 Minneapolis, USA, lives and works in Berlin, Germany) work fuses disparate and even contradictory spheres of knowledge into works of art that live as monstrosities of significance. Utilising a perpetually expanding field of examination, Monkkonen manages to traverse multiple fields of research while discovering unlikely relationships and common threads. Focusing on art’s tendency towards occupying liminal spaces, Monkkonen’s work often exists in vicinity to the boundaries that separate art and everything else in the world as we know it.
