첼리스트 요요마(Yo-Yo Ma, 1955 - )는 한 인터뷰에서 자신이 하는 일은 웨이터와 같다고 했다. 요리사가 자신만의 레시피로 영감을 발휘해 조리한 음식을 정성스럽게 손님 앞에 가져다주는 웨이터처럼 자신은 작곡가의 열정이 담긴 작품을 충실히 청중에게 들려주는 일을 한다는 것이다. 세계적인 음악가의 겸손함이 느껴지는 대목이다. 식재료를 자신만의 영감과 방식으로 조리해 창의적인 요리를 빚어내는 요리사처럼 예술가도 자신이 선택한 대상을 그리고, 새기고, 설치하고 찍어가며 새로운 무엇인가를 만들어간다. 우리는 그들의 방식을 소위 ‘장르(genre/medium)’라고 부른다. 각 장르에는 나름의 특색과 장점, 그리고 한계점이 있기에 예술가는 자신에게 맞는 장르를 선택해 작업한다. 물론 오늘날 모든 장르를 넘나들며 종횡무진 활약하는 작가들도 많으며, 현대미술에서 이러한 매체의 구분은 의미가 없을지도 모른다. 그럼에도, 사람들은 여전히 특정 예술 장르를 선호하거나, 각 장르에 대한 편견을 갖기도 한다. 이에 아트스페이스 J에서는 동일하거나 비슷한 대상을 제각기 자신만의 방식으로 조리해 낸 작가들의 작품을 1 대 1로 묶어보았다.

특유의 유머와 유희를 바탕으로 형형색색의 컬러감이 돋보이는 작업을 보여주는 황규태와 카우스(KAWS), 정제된 단아한 톤으로 백자의 은은한 미감을 전하는 구본창과 최영욱, 현대적이고 절제된 조형언어로 내밀한 서정의 세계를 심화시킨 김환기와 이우환, 아래로 살짝 눈을 내리 감은 여인의 측면을 담아낸 랄프 깁슨(Ralph Gibson)과 알렉스 카츠(Alex Katz), 바쁘게 걸어가는 현대인의 일상을 포착한 줄리안 오피(Julian Opie)와 김미아, 자본주의를 상징하는 돈을 표현한 정지필과 앤디 워홀(Andy Warhol), 여인의 누드를 감각적으로 구현한 민병헌과 김일해, 그리고 동시대 아름다운 여인의 형상을 담은 루스 오킨(Ruth Orkin)과 오세열에 이르기까지. 아트스페이스 J는 작가의 유명세나 국적과 장르, 그리고 세대를 떠나, 같거나 유사한 대상을 각기 다른 매체로 구현한 작가들의 작품을 나란히 놓아 살펴보는 ‘병치의 장(場)’을 마련해 보았다. 마치 노란색은 검은색과 대비했을 때 훨씬 더 선명해 보이는 미술에서의 색상대비라든지, 음악에서 독창이나 독주도 좋지만 중창이나 합주가 만들어내는 화음과 같이, 다르게 조리된 작품들을 나란히 놓았을 때 더 도드라져 보이는 각 장르 간의 매력은 무엇일지, 또는 두 매체가 어우러지며 만들어내는 상승효과는 어떨는지와 같은 상상을 즐겁게 하면서 말이다.

‘따로 또 같이’, 매체 간의 상호적 울림에 대한 상상의 여지를 남겨둔 <병치(竝置)의 즐거움 Ⅰ_Mix & Match>展이 시각적 즐거움뿐 만 아니라 기존 장르에 대한 고정관념을 탈피해 동시대 미술을 새로운 시각으로 바라보고, ‘매체 간의 병치를 통한 미학’에 대해 사유해 볼 수 있는 시간이 되기를 바란다.

Joy of Juxtaposition I_Mix & Match_2022.01.11-03.29

Cellist Yo-Yo Ma (1955- ) once made a surprising analogy of his job as a performer to a server in a restaurant. Much like a chef’s prepared dish which is served to the diner, a musician faithfully performs to convey the composer’s musical ideas to the audience. There is a sense of humility in this metaphor from a world-class musician. Like a chef who transforms ingredients into an inspired dish, which often requires imagination and creativity, artists draw, engrave, install, and take pictures of their objects to create something new. We call their method the ‘genre or medium'. Each genre has its own characteristics, strengths, and limitations, so the artist selects and works on a genre that suits her artistic aspirations.  Of course, there are many artists who are active across many genres today, and perhaps this distinction among various media in the contemporary arts have weakened.  Nevertheless, some viewers prefer a specific genre and even hold prejudice against another. In this exhibition, Art Space J presents the works of artists who “cooked” the same or similar objects in their own way.

   Hwang Gyu-tae & Kaws, who show off colorful colors based on unique humor and play, Koo Bohn-chang  & Choi Young-wook, who convey the subtle aesthetics of white porcelain in refined elegant tones, Kim Hwan-ki & Lee Woo-hwan, who deepened the world of deep lyricism with modern and restrained formative language, Ralph Gibson & Alex Katz, who captured the side of a woman with her eyes slightly closed downward, Julian Opie & Kim Mia, who captured the busy daily lives of modern people, Jung Ji-pil & Andy Warhol, who expressed money symbolizing capitalism, Min Byung Hun and Kim Il Hae, who sensibly embodied the nudity of a woman, and even Ruth Orkin & Oh Se-yeol, who expressed the figures of a beautiful woman of the his time. Art Space J has set up a "field of juxtaposition" where we looked at a pair of works side by side that embody the same or similar objects in different medium regardless of the artist's popularity, nationality, genre, and generation. As in the harmony of a musical ensemble, interplay of contrasting colors, and a tasteful blend of culinary ingredients, we hope to spark imagination and offer new perspectives in examining objects explored across different genres and media. 



In< Joy of Juxtaposition I_Mix & Match >, viewers will appreciate the imaginative play and resonance of arts in different media, as the exhibition provides a time to break away from the stereotypical views and think about the contemporary art from a new perspective and the aesthetics across multiple media.
