베리어스 스몰 파이어스는 사라 안스티스의 아시아 첫 개인전을 소개한다. <번들>은 종이와 회화 신작을 통해 작가의 세계를 들여다본다. 안스티스 작품 속 인물은 꿈같은 요소가 가득한 세상에 산다. 화려한 색상 안료로 표현된 각각의 나체는 연약함과 권위를 풍긴다. 소프트 파스텔을 사용해 관능미가 더욱 발산된다. 작가에게 문지르고 만지는 행위는 손가락과 피부 같은 종이 표면 사이 간접적 연결을 통해 그녀의 작업을 발견하는 수단이 되었다. 이러한 작가의 손길은 크기가 큰 작품이자 최근 시도한 회화 작업에서 매혹적인 방식으로 동일하게 번역된다.

사라 안스티스(1991년, 스웨덴 스톡홀롬 출생, 런던에 거주하며 작업)는 캐나다 몬트리올 컨커디어대학교에서 스튜디오 아트와 사회학 학사 학위를 취득했고, 스웨덴 예테보리 발란드 아카데미 석사를 졸업했다. 2018년, 그녀는 런던 로열 드로잉 스쿨에서 드로잉 프로그램 석사를 마쳤다. 작가는 몬트리올 브래들리 에르타스키란, 취리히 파비안 랭에서 개인전을 가졌다. 오슬로 쿤스트네르포분데트, 뉴욕 카스민 갤러리, 파리 데루용 갤러리, 뉴욕 라일즈 앤 킹, 이탈리아 브레시아 팔라조 몬티에서의 단체전에 참여했다. 그녀는 엘리자베스 그린쉴즈 재단, 저우드 예술 보조금, 안나 리사 톰슨 재단 등에서 후원을 받았다.

Various Small Fires is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Sara Anstis, the artist’s first with the gallery and in Asia. Bundle offers a glimpse inside the artist’s world through recent works on paper and canvas.
Anstis’ figures inhabit an environment ripe with dreamlike elements. Each naked body, rendered in brilliantly colored pigments, exudes both vulnerability and authority. An aura of sensuality is developed by the artist’s use of soft pastels. For the artist, the act of rubbing and touching has become a means for finding her work through an unmediated connection between her fingers and the paper’s skin-like surface. Paintings on canvas, a more recent development in her practice, translate the artist’s touch on a grander scale and in an equally enticing manner.
The figures in these works are almost always in a state of embrace: an arm caressed around a shoulder, or the reassuring touch of a hand. These emblems of tenderness and care speak to a sense of solidarity shared by the figures of Anstis’s otherworldly universe while also signaling profound relationships between them. The nature of these relationships are open for interpretation, though a number of works suggest Anstis’s interest in the complicated nature of maternal bonds. More ambiguously, they also speak of characters grappling with their connection to the landscape they occupy, as well as with the intricacies of surrogacy, loneliness and bloat. There is an emphasis on the difference in scale between entities and the power imbalances affecting them. In Small Mother (all works 2021), a large, pregnant woman tenderly holds a smaller adult figure in a composition reminiscent of the Madonna and Child.
The exhibition’s largest work, Moonflower, encapsulates a surreal tone that rings throughout. Three figures sit before a dark background: one painted in a vibrant bloody red reaches to her neighbor while the third points out a wound on her leg. Each woman’s face remains calmly composed, establishing a false serenity that is echoed by the poisonous blooming moonflowers and a dog stretching nervously in the shadows. The work’s central figure notably looks out to the viewer, inviting one to contemplate their place in Anstis’s sublime universe.
Sara Anstis (b. 1991, Stockholm, Sweden, lives and works in London, United Kingdom) received a BFA in Studio Art and Sociology at Concordia University, Montreal and an MFA from Valand Academy, Gothenburg, Sweden. In 2018, she completed the Drawing Year Postgraduate Programme at The Royal Drawing School, London. The artist has had solo shows at Bradley Ertaskiran, Montreal, and Fabian Lang, Zurich. Recent group exhibitions include, Kunsternerforbundet, Oslo; Kasmin Gallery, New York; Galerie Derouillon, Paris; Lyles & King, New York; and Palazzo Monti, Brescia. She has received grants from the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation, Jerwood Arts Bursary, and the Anna-Lisa Thomson Foundation amongst others.
