CR Collective 씨알콜렉티브는 2023년 첫 전시로 홍범 개인전 《The Metamorphosis of Moments (순간의 변형)》을 오는 2.21(화)부터 3.25(토)까지 개최한다. 뉴욕과 서울을 베이스로 활동해온 홍범은 기억 속의 감각과 정서를 따라 가상의 장소와 공간을 창조하거나, 특정 공간이나 그 장소성을 구현함으로써 사적 또는 공동의 기억을 소환해왔다. 몇 년간의 팬데믹 상황을 겪은 그는 사적인 문제로 침잠하여 감정의 움직임과 지각의 흐름을 따라 기억을 다이어그램으로 도식화하고, 가상이자 미지의 공간을 비선형적 기억이 깃든 선형적 영상 이미지로 직조하여 선험적인 것 또는 심리적 의미에 대해 고민해왔다. 특히 ‘뇌과학’ 분야에 관한 관심으로 사진 이미지나 영화의 한 컷 같은 기억(working memory)을 패턴화하여 감각과 상상력을 확장하는 신작 [연필 드로잉 시리즈(20여 점), 템페라 페인팅 1점, 입체설치 1점, 그리고 4채널 영상 1점과 단채널영상 2점]을 선보인다.

홍범의 뇌가 창조한 세계상은 시간과 공간이란 실체를 바탕으로 어떤 순간을 기억하게 만드는 감각이나 정서에 대한 몰입에서 만들어진다. 작가는 특정 공간을 재현한다기보다는 기억을 픽처링(picturing)하듯 순간을 붙잡고, 이를 연상작용이나 자동기술법을 통해 선형적 이미지로 연결한다. 드로잉 작업에서는 계단이나 복도가 있는 아치(arch), 그리고 축음기 모양으로 공간을 확장하거나 연결하여 공간 옆에 공간, 공간 안에 공간 같은 반복적이고 초현실적인 구성과 함께 세밀한 선묘로 내밀함과 기이함을 드러내고 있다. 또한, 드로잉을 입체로 구현한듯한 설치작업은 패턴조각(3D프린팅으로 제작)들을 기계적이고 구조적인 방식으로 조합하여 궁(宮)의 미니어처 같은 형태의 공간으로 심적 흐름을 시각화한다.
입체작업을 바탕으로 한 영상작업은 안에서 밖으로, 그리고 밖에서 안으로의 빛을 따라 어두운 공간들의 윤곽을 밝히면서 시선의 동선을 드러내는데, 복잡하게 구성된 오래된 원형구조의 마을이나 오래된 성처럼 안팎이 확연히 분리되지만 그 장소를 보는 시선에 따라 가변적이고 유동적인 방향과 응시를 삽입한다. 이 작업은 숲속에서 길을 잃고 다시 찾는 개인적인 경험을 통해서 발견한 공간을 새롭게 보게 되는 인식전환의 순간을 압축적으로 구현하고 있다. 동시에 작가가 어릴 때 살던 주택 화장실의 특이한 구조나 아파트 대단지의 패턴화된 놀이터로부터 한국에서 미국으로 이주하여 첫 장만한 집주변 낮은 주택가의 모습에 이르기까지 성장하면서 익숙하지만 기이한 공간의 구체적 모습들도 등장한다. 낯선 공간을 맞닥뜨릴 때 설렘과 함께 불안함을 느끼듯, 끊임없이 가족이나 지인과의 관계를 상징하는 안락한 장소를 찾다가도 비밀스럽고 불안정한 이중적인 공간 이미지를 만들어낸다. 그리고 경험과 정서를 반영한 꿈 또는 기억과 관계하면서 시공간의 의미를 추상화한다.
작가는 “감정의 뇌가 상영하는 영화”(박문호*)나 메타버스 안의 게임과도 같이 기억과 꿈을 그려내고 있다. “인상적인 순간들에 대해 기대하지 않았던 연결과 그 연결로 인해 만들어진 그 순간들의 변형은 엉뚱하지만, 유기적이고 입체적이며, 동시에 지금 내가 가진 의식적인(동시에 무의식적인) 감정과 느낌이 반영되었다는 것을 알 수가 있다. 꿈에선 기억에 없는 공간과 사건이 벌어지곤 하는데, 바로 이런 것들은 내 깊은 감정의 느낌을 바탕으로 다가오는 미래에 대한 공감각적인 예측일 수도 있다고 할 수 있다. 이번 전시명 《순간의 변형(The Metamorphosis of Moments)》은, 번데기에서 나비가 되는 변형의 순간같이 기억이 극적으로 변환하여 창조한 세계상, 그리고 그 순간들을 소환한다. 홍범은 “기억들에 담긴 순간들은 미래, 과거, 현재의 시간적인 제한을 넘어서, 그 나름의 유기적인 연결을 이루며, 내가 받아들인 세계의 또 다른 반영을 만들어가고 있다는 생각이 들었다. 기억의 변형, 즉 기억 속에 담긴 순간들의 변형과 변이를 주의 깊게 살펴보는 작업에 관한 생각은 바로 이 지점에서 시작된다. 그것은 공간들을 인식하면서 기억을 바탕으로 작업을 해왔던 지난 작업과는 분명히 궤를 달리하는 것이었고, 좀 더 기억 속에 담긴 느낌과 정서 등에 집중하고 동시에 여러 다른 공간들과 순간들을 연결하면서 자유로운 표현과 실험을 해 볼 수가 있었다.”라고 말한다. 감정을 수반한 기억을 붙잡아 시공간 속에서 연결하고 확장하는 그의 실험은 이민의 경험으로부터 안주하지 못하고 이주를 반복하고 있는 존재적 불안 속에서 가족이라는 경계를 공고히 하려는 정주에 대한 집착과 또 다른 비밀스러운 가상의 방을 게임을 하듯이 찾아가고 있는 이중적인 심리를 드러내고 있는 것은 아닐까. - 씨알콜렉티브 오세원
The CR Collective is pleased to hold Buhm Hong’s solo exhibition The Metamorphosis of Moments from February 21st to March 25th as its first exhibition of 2023. Buhm Hong, who has worked in New York and Seoul, has recalled private and public memories by representing a specific space and its spatiality, or constructed virtual spaces according to senses and emotions from memory. After experiencing the pandemic years, Hong has immersed himself in private memory matters, diagrammed memories along with emotional movements and perceptual flows, and contemplated a priori or psychological meaning by weaving virtual and unknown spaces into linear images entangled with nonlinear memories. As being interested in the field of Brain Science, he has created new works including a sixteen piece pencil drawing series, a tempera painting, a three-dimensional installation, and one four-channel video and two single-channel video works, which expand sense and imagination by patterning working memory such as photos or movies.

The image of a world created by Hong’s brain originated from the immersion in senses or emotions, which are woven by the reality of time and space. Rather than representing a specific space, artist Buhm Hong captures a moment as if he were picturing a memory, and connects it to a linear image through an association process or automatism. For example, in his drawing, surreal expression appears such as a space next to the space or a space within the space by connecting or expanding spaces in the shapes of stairs, corridors, and a phonograph. The three-dimensional installation is found in the combination of pattern pieces (made by 3D printing) in a mechanical and structural manner, and then visualizes mental flow into the space of a miniature-like palace.
This work comprehensively embodies the moment of a change in perception in which one newly discovers a space through personal experiences of getting lost in the forest and finding it again. In his video work, the inside and outside are clearly separated, as one can see in a complexly constructed old circular village or an old castle. But variable and flexible gazes are unveiled in the work depending on the angle of one’s looking at the place. Just as one feels nervous with excitement when facing an unfamiliar space, the work creates dual spatial images such as a stable room, symbolizing a relationship with one’s family or acquaintances as well as solitary and unstable places. In addition, it abstracts the meaning of time and space while relating to dreams or memories reflecting experiences and emotions. As such, the artist depicts memories and dreams similar to “a movie that is screened by the brain of emotions”(Park, ibid) or games in the metaverse. Hong wrote, “I can see that the unexpected connection to impressive moments and the variations of moments created by such connection are simply bizarre. Yet they are also organic and three-dimensional by reflecting my conscious (and unconscious) emotions and feelings that I feel now. In my dreams, spaces and events that do not exist in my memories often appear, and these can be synesthetic predictions of the upcoming future based on my deep emotions. The exhibition title The Metamorphosis of Moments recalls the world image and moments created by a dramatic transformation of memory, such as the moment of transformation from pupae to butterfly. Hong said, “I felt that the moments in the memories were beyond the time limits of the future, past, and present, forming their own organic connection and creating another reflection of the world I accepted. The idea of the deformation of memory, namely my work of carefully examining the deformation and variation of the moments in memory, started from this point. It was clearly different from my previous works which were based on memory and recognized spaces, and I was able to express and experiment freely while focusing more on the feelings and emotions contained in memory and connecting various spaces and moments at the same time.” His experiment of capturing, connecting, and expanding emotional memories in space and time may reveal his obsession with settlement to strengthen the boundaries of family amid existential anxiety caused from his immigration experience as well as his ambiguous psychology constantly seeking another secret virtual room as if he was playing a game.
