해외문화홍보원(KOCIS, 원장 김장호)과 주캐나다한국대사관(대사 임웅순), 그리고 주캐나다한국문화원(원장 이성은)은 2023한-캐 수교 60주년을 기념하여 실시된 큐레이터 공모전시의 세 번째 작품 <장소에 대한 새로운 상상: 땅, 가게, 집>전시를 개최한다.
로얄온타리오박물관 한국관 큐레이터인 권성연 박사와 요크대학교 미술대학교 미술사학과 갈홍 교수가 공동 기획한 본전시는 윤진미, 다이애나 유, 정윤진 등 한국계 캐나다 미술인 3인의 멀티미디어 영상, 사진, 설치, 증강현실 매체 등의 작품이 전시된다.
최근 몇 년 동안, 원주민 및 사회적 약자들에 대한 역사적 부정이 급증함에 따라 캐나다 사회의 관심이 높아졌다. 이러한 문제로 이민자들이 무인지대를 개척하여 만든 국가라는 고정관념에 근거한 캐나다의 국가 정체성은 도전을 받았다. 한편, 아시아계 이민자들 및 그들의 후손들의 유색인 이민자로서의 삶의 경험은 캐나다인의 정체성에 대한 다양성을 더해왔다. 이러한 맥락 속에서 개최된 이번 전시, <새로운 공간에 대한 상상: 땅, 가게, 집>은 3명의 한국계 캐나다 작가들의 다양한 차원과 다층적인 유색인 정착민으로서의 삶의 경험을 '땅, 가게, 집'이라는 키워드를 통해 선보인다.
윤진미의 싱글 채널 비디오 < Long Time So Long >은 식민지와 환경 파괴로 인한 변화하는 강 어귀에서의 퍼포머의 모습을 담고 있다. 다이애나 유의 사진 시리즈 < Inconveniences >는 편의점을 저항과 소통의 장소로 전환하여 자본주의 문화에 대한 불편함을 보여준다. 정윤진의 멀티미디어 작업은 강제 이주에 관한 이야기를 사진, 비디오, 설치 및 증강 현실 매체를 통해 표현하며, 관객들이 직접 참여할 수 있도록 한다.
공동큐레이터인 권성연과 갈홍은 “이 전시는 국경과 세대를 넘나드는 다양한 역사적 트라우마의 얽힌 기억을 다룬 세명의 작가들의 작업을 통해 관객들로 하여금 식민주의, 자본주의, 인종차별, 다문화에 대한 비평적 대화에 참여하고, 땅에 대한 식민주의적이고 자본주의적인 개념들을 고찰하며, 나아가 공존하면서 살아가는 새로운 방식들을 상상하도록 초대하고 있다”고 밝히고 있다.
한국문화원 이성은 원장은 “ 큐레이터 공모전은 2022년, 주캐나다 한국문화원이 2023년 한-캐 국교수립 60주년을 앞두고 그동안 쌓아 온 한국과 캐나다의 친밀한 협력관계를 축하하고 미래지향적인 양국관계의 향후 60년을 제시할 수 있는 비평적인 시각을 가진 큐레이터들의 전시기획안을 공모하고자 기획하였다. 그 지원금을 통하여 제작된 작품들을 2022-2023년에 걸쳐 문화원 전시실에서 전시하고 있으며, 공모 당선작 중 세번째로 선보이는 본 전시는 한-캐의 우호적인 역사를 바탕으로 더욱 긴밀한 협력관계를 향해 나아가는 원년인 한-캐 수교 60주년 기념의 해에 양국의 관계를 비평적이고도 건설적인 시각에서 제시하는 아주 적절한 전시라고 생각된다” 고 언급하였다.

The Korean Culture & Information Service (KOCIS), the Embassy of the Republic of Korea, and the Korean Cultural Centre Canada (KCC) proudly announce the exhibition < Reimagining Places: Land, Store, Home >. The third exhibition, from 2022’s open call to celebrate the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Canada and Korea, will run at the KCC Gallery from April 27 to June 9.
Co-curated by esteemed experts Vicki Sung-yeon Kwon, Associate Curator of Korean Art & Culture at the Royal Ontario Museum, and Hong Kal, Associate Professor of Art History at York University, the exhibition features the innovative work of Korean Canadian artists Jin-me Yoon, Diana Yoo, and Yoon Jin Jung.
As Canada faces a growing interest in acknowledging and addressing historical injustices towards Indigenous and marginalized communities, the exhibition explores the complex experiences of Asian migrants and their descendants as visual minorities. < Reimagining Places: Land, Store, Home > presents new projects by the three artists that delve into their multifaceted, layered experiences of living on colonized land as migrants of colour, through the themes of land, store, and home.
The exhibition showcases Jin0me Yoon’s single-channel video , created during the pandemic, which explores the artist’s performance for the camera in charged landscapes. Diana Yoo's photographic series < Inconveniences > offers a nuanced representation of convenience stores as sites of resistance to capitalism that erase "inconvenient" histories related to racialized minorities and their labour. Yoon Jin Jung's multimedia works focus on displacement, inviting audience participation to reflect on and take action to help those who have lost housing due to war, disaster, or economic inequality.
The trio explores intricate histories and traumatic memories from transnational and transgenerational perspectives, inviting viewers to engage in critical conversations on colonialism, capitalism, racism, and multiculturalism. The exhibition challenges the concepts of colonial claims to land and capitalist ownership, envisioning alternative ways of being and cohabiting.
The KCC stated, "Earlier in 2022, the KCC called for curators to submit new exhibition proposals to celebrate the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Korea and Canada in 2023. The goal was to foster critical dialogues between Korean and Canadian curators and envision deeper connectivity and sustainable collaboration between the two countries. < Reimagining Places: Land, Store, Home > is the third of four selected curatorial proposals, and its presentation is timely as we strive to envision the best for our future relations."
