프람프트 프로젝트는 20232023년, 올해의 마지막을 장식하는 전시로 작가 멜로디박의 개인전 展을 1212월 55일부터 1212월 3131일까지 진행한다.

평면 회화의 필수 표현 요소로서의 색 은 회화 장르에서 오랜 기간 사용되어지며 다양한 감각과 그 형태를 띠어 왔다. 2 2차원적 평면의 화폭 위에 피어나는 색채의 표현은 아티스트의 자유분방한 브러쉬 스트로크(brush 를 한 층 더 과감하게 만들기도 하고 보는 이들로 하여금 깊이감 있는 농도와 그 온도를 느끼게 하기도 하며 두터운 마띠에르와 함께 특유의 질감과 조형미를 드러내기도 한다. 작가 멜로디박은 이러한 다층적인 매력을 지닌 색에 드로잉 스톤이나 분말 입자와 같은 미디엄을 더한 자신만의 독창적이고 구애받지 않은 회화를 화면 위로 이끌어낸다

공간이나 빛의 세기, 농도에 따라 보이는 색에 대한 인간의 인식은 각기 다르게 작용하는데, 작가는 이처럼 개인마다 달리 느끼는 색채의 정렬을 연구하고 다양한 재료와의 혼합 및 제조를 통해 작업하는 물리적인 과정과 그 행위 자체에서 즐거움을 찾는다.

주로 자연광이 있을 때만 작업을 한다는 작가는 재료의 물질적 선명함을 자연광을 통해 더욱 예민하고 풍부하게 포착하여 화폭 위에 자유로운 붓의 흔적을 쌓아 올리고 사방으로 중첩되는 빛과 색의 산란을 표현한다. 그는 자신이 즐겨왔던 재료적 실험을 선보이는 동시에 기억의 편린으로부터 출발하는 내러티브와 추상을 아우르는 심미적 정서를 색채에 반영하여 관람자들에게 그에 동반되는 내면의 감각과 사유를 직접 구축할 순간을 경험하도록 만든다.

작가는 이번 전시에서 기존에 사용해오던 혼합재료 외에 버드나무 차콜(Willow 을 오일물감에 섞은 자신만의 '새로운 색'의 첫 선을 보일 예정이다. 차콜은 르네상스 이전 동굴 벽화부터 현재까지 작가들에게 클래식한, 크로키나 드로잉을 위한 기본 재료로 사용되었지만 작가 멜로디박에게는 그가 상상해온 유니크한 그레이를 제조하기 위한 하나의 ‘도구‘로 사용되며 그 과정을 통해 비로소 Willow charcoal gray가 생성된다.

프람프트 프로젝트의 공간을 가득 채운 작가 멜로디박의 독특한 빛을 머금은 물감과 피그먼트는 그 물질적 존재감을 가감없이 드러내며 관람자들에게 다가간다. 작가는 Willow charcoal gray와 같은 자신의 기억 속에서만 부유하던 색을 선택적으로 제조, 실험해 나가고, 그 결과 화면 위로 풀어지는 색채의 향연은 보는 이들에게 그만의 시각적 탐구를 체험하는 순간을 선사함과 동시에 작가가 의도하는 회화의 의미에 대한 구체적이고 탐구적인 태도를 엿볼 수 있는 기회를 제공할 것이다.

As the last exhibition celebrating the end of 2023, Prompt Project is pleased to present a solo exhibition by artist Melody Park titled Willow Charcoal Gray from December 5th to 31st.

‘Color,’ an essential expression element of two-dimensional painting, has been used in the painting genre for a long time in various senses and forms. The bold expression of color blossoming on the two-dimensional surface by the carefree brush stroke of the artist elevates its temperature with deeper density, and along with the thick matière, brings out its unique texture and aesthetic. Artist Melody Park applies this multi-layered charming color to mediums such as drawing stone or powder particles to bring to surface her unique and unrestricted painting.

Each human’s perception of color varies deeply depending on the strength or density of space or light. Park researches the scope of color felt by each individual, and enjoys the physical process of combining and making various materials.

“Even if the same color (pigment, color paint) is used, the mood expressed is absolutely different according to the thickness, viscosity, texture and density. I enjoy exploring, expressing and creating my own colors with the various powdered materials such as pigment (powder), color paint (paste) and drawing stones (solid). It is based on my baking sense of analyzing, mixing, and expressing each material’s characteristics.”

The artist usually only works when there is natural light because the material’s physical clarity is more sensitively and abundantly captured. She layers the carefree traces of brushstrokes on the canvas and expresses the overlapped light that scatters in all directions and the ovipositional of color. She presents the materialistic experiments which she has enjoyed, while simultaneously reflecting color which shows narrative started from a glimpse of memory and embracing abstraction for aesthetic emotion. Viewers experience the inner senses and reason which accompany her and get a chance to build their own.

In this exhibition, Park introduces Willow Charcoal which she has mixed with oil as her “unique color” for the first time along with her existing mixed materials. Charcoal has been used as a classical basic material for croquis and drawing from the ages of cave painting before Renaissance until present; however, for artist Melody Park, charcoal is a “tool” to create a unique gray which she has imagined and through this process Willow charcoal gray was born.

The space of Prompt Project, filled with Melody Park’s art works with paint and pigment that retained unique light, approaches the viewers displaying its materialistic spirit with no refrain. Park experiments and creates colors such as Willow charcoal gray which existed only in her memories, and as a result, the burst of colors unfolding on the surface offers its viewers a chance to freshly absorb her unique aesthetic while also giving them a sense of her concrete and experimental approach toward meaning of painting which she intended.

멜로디박 / Melody Park (b.1987)

빛과 색의 교집합을 회화작업으로 이끌어내는 작가 멜로디박은 재료에 구애받지 않은 회화를 보여주는 아티스트이다. 그는 캔버스 위를 가로지르는 브러쉬 스트로크(brush stroke)의 드로잉과 같은 회화로 유명하며, 버드나무 차콜(willow charcoal)이나 드로잉 스톤과 같은 고체의 미디엄을 물감에 섞어 기성 컬러 외의 새로운 이름의 색을 만드는 실험적이고 물리적인 작업을 즐긴다. 작가의 작업은 보는 이들에게 그의 이러한 탐구적 정신으로부터 깊이 응축된 색채의 리듬감을 느끼게 하며, 회화 속 색이라는 기본 요소의 본질에 대한 의미를 되짚는 시간을 갖게 한다.

Melody Park who shows the meeting of light and color through the painting process is an artist who creates paintings that are not limited by materials. She is famous for drawing-like paintings in which the brush stroke crosses the canvas.
Like mixing particle mediums such as willow charcoal or drawing stone with liquid paint, she enjoys the experimental and physical process of creating a color with a new name that is different from standard colors. Her working process makes her viewers feel the rhythm of the color which was deeply condensed from her exploratory attitude, and makes us ponder on the meaning of color in painting as a basic element.
